In France a "carrelet" is not only a fish -the plaice- but also a square mesh with an area of a few square meters stretched over a frame down flat horizontally by means of a winch from a pontoon advancing sea and which is usually constructed shelter, even a small apartment. After waiting a few minutes for dissipation of the disorder caused by the descent, the net is recovered fairly quickly, trapping fish in principle that stood between it and the surface. Fishing for plaice is widely practiced on the coasts of Charente-Maritime and estuaries of the Charente and the Gironde. It is also practiced on the steep coast of Vendée and to the mouth of the Loire, but in these regions the tradition tends to fade.
